Tires are one of the most important components of the vehicle’s driving mechanism. They are also the second largest cost object in truck operations after diesel, and are directly related to the safety and economic efficiency of the vehicle. If tires are not selected and used correctly, not only will the various performance indicators of the vehicle be reduced, but also the driving safety of the vehicle will be affected, and even unnecessary casualties and property losses will be caused. Therefore, what kind of tires to choose, how to use tires well to make the tires last longer, and how to maintain tires…are issues that many truck drivers are very concerned about, especially the “abnormal wear” that should be avoided. Therefore, how to choose truck tires is very important.
Causes of abnormal wear of tires and improvement suggestions
There are many situations that may cause tire wear. Please check them one by one:
- The steel plate of the trailer is displaced, or the wheelbase is not accurately positioned
- The rim is out of round, or the top plate of the rim is uneven
These two items may cause the tire to jump up and down, or sway left and right. It is very simple to check whether this exists. You can drive a small car behind a large truck and carefully see if your tires jump up and down or sway left and right.
Suggestion: If there is one, replace the wheel hub, don’t try to repair it, because the price difference between the rim and the tire is very large, I personally think it is not worth it. - Uneven tire pressure
Uneven tire pressure on the same wheel position will cause different rolling resistance of the two tires, causing abnormal wear. Uneven tire pressure on the same axle will also cause abnormal wear, but it is not obvious. - Use different tires on the same axle
Misconception: Many drivers will simply consider whether the tread depth of the two tires on the same wheel position is consistent when choosing tires for trailers, or whether the height of the two tires is consistent.
Imagine: If the diameters of the two tires are inconsistent, then the circumference must be different. If the circumference is different, then the distance of the same rolling circle will also be different. If the rolling distances of the tires on the same wheel position are inconsistent, then one tire must be forcibly dragging the other tire to roll the same distance; then the abnormal wear must be very serious. That is to say, the two tires must roll the same distance, and the difference in their rolling distance must be dragged over. The internal structure of different tire brands is also different, and the degree of deformation of the tires when overloaded will also be different. Especially for nylon wire tires, the deformation will be very different.
Suggestion: The same brand and the same pattern depth must be used for the same tire. If conditions permit, try to use the same tire on the same axle. - Selection of reinforcement pads in tire repair
At present, steel wire tire repairs are generally fire repairs, mostly using pads peeled from old tires, or finished steel wire pads. The strength of the repaired area will definitely increase a lot, and the weight will also increase. It is bound to cause the tire to hit the road surface with excessive force when rolling, causing wear.
Suggestion: When repairing tires, try to use lighter tire reinforcement pads. Repaired tires are easy to balance before use. - The tire itself has design defects
Many manufacturers will not admit this. They will tell you that you are overloaded or the air pressure is not well controlled. In fact, every tire manufacturer has considered that the tire will be used for overloading when designing the tire, otherwise there will definitely be too many three-pack tires during domestic use, and they can’t bear it.
Suggestion: Friends, try to choose genuine tires from large manufacturers, and don’t buy tires without three packs for cheapness. - Braking problems
The braking effect of each wheel is uneven during braking, or the brake pot is out of round. - Wrong tire installation
Few people usually notice that many brands of tires now have rolling direction markings, and few people think it is necessary.
Reminder: In fact, it is necessary to install the tire in the rolling direction indicated by the manufacturer, because the crown of the wire tire has a winding direction. Using it in the opposite direction will affect the rolling resistance and service life. - Wrong tire selection
Friends who know about cars know that tires also have speed levels, and truck tires also have this saying. If tires with block patterns or transverse patterns roll at high speeds, they will inevitably have slight abnormal wear.
Suggestion: Friends who drive on highways should try not to choose load-bearing pattern tires and off-road pattern tires. - Problems with front wheel toe and steering system
In fact, the results of each abnormal wear tire tread have different performances. There are special pictures and instructions in the previous textbooks, but unfortunately they are all nylon tires. I didn’t find the wire tires, otherwise I would definitely share them with everyone. However, as long as everyone is attentive and careful, they can also summarize their own experience.
